786 - Identity Is Discovered, Not Achieved
===

But before I do that really quick I just want to make sure that you are submitting your questions.

If you want to be a part of it, there's a link in the show notes for you to submit your question. You can do it in a way that protects your identity.
So don't worry if that's important to you. We'll make sure that things stay under wraps. But we want to make sure you get the help you deserve. And again, if you're ready to submit a question, the links in the show notes for you to do that [00:02:00] today, we're gonna be talking about identity. And I recently did a talk.
I mean, not so recently now, but I had the privilege of speaking at a conference of about 500 men who really, you know, dedicated a Saturday of their life to improve, to get better. and to walk in more godliness. And I was asked specifically to come and, you know, do my signature talk about pornography and helping guys quit.
And it's interesting, we have three pillars of recovery. They are self awareness, transformation of the heart and shifting your identity. And so, there's different ways that I would kind of do this presentation and give this talk. But as I was preparing, I actually felt like God challenged me and To kind of give this crowd a little bit of a different flavor, a bit of a different angle of freedom and of healing instead of just the usual.
And I felt a little bit scared by it at first, but I was actually really glad the talk turned out really well. We sold out of our books and, you know, just the response was, was overwhelming and a lot of guys really experiencing breakthrough, [00:03:00] appreciating the vulnerability, all that kind of stuff.
What I wanted to do in the episode today, I don't have time to give you all three, although actually the first two have been scattered throughout this podcast. So if you've been listening for a while, You've probably heard them already anyway, but the interesting thing is the third thing that I, I wound up sharing about was actually still all about identity.
And when I kind of reflected afterwards, I actually didn't realize in the moment, but I realized, man, it's interesting to see just what subjects you can't run away from, because if you can't run away from it, it's probably a good sign that it's a really, really, really important subject. And I think when it comes to identity, that is.
100 percent the case. The way I framed it in this particular talk is how I want to frame it to you today as well, which is that we mistakenly think identity is achieved. You know, it's something that we accomplish, and it's sort of a target that we head towards when in reality, [00:04:00] Identity is discovered.
When, when you give your life to Jesus, you become a new creation, period. No ifs, ands, or buts. You could be Hitler himself. You know, you could be the person who has done the absolute worst things. When you give your life to Jesus, you become a new creation. Do you become perfect? No. Do probably all, if not most of your habits still exist?
Good or bad? Yeah. So what do we mean when we say you're a new creation? Well, what we mean is you have a bank account that is infinitely full, but your card limit when you start out to access those funds is very small. Maybe you can only access a thousand dollars at a time. And then as you grow and mature spiritually, you start to access 5, 000 and 10, 000.
And you know, there's, there's no limit here, [00:05:00] but as soon as you give your life to Jesus, cha ching, you know, the bank account fills up, it's full, but learning to increase our access to this is the discovery process. Your identity, you, you have everything in your account, you know, from one believer to the next, We all have full account, but we all have to learn how to access that identity, how to access those good habits and that confidence and the right way to think, you know, the mind of Christ, all of those pieces, we have to learn how to access them.
What I want to encourage you in today is, you know, we're all, I would assume we're all learning and figuring out how to grow in our identity, our sense of self, the way we view ourselves and everything that comes with it. Okay, we're all trying to learn and to grow in this area rather than trying to achieve identity.
Trying to, you know, check a bunch of boxes or do things a certain way. I want to encourage you to discover your identity to [00:06:00] discover it. In other words, you have what you need. God has made you into that person and now it's a matter of improving incrementally. You know, I love that that same which is like just get 1 percent better every single day and a year, 5 years, 10 years from now.
You'll be radically different. It's the same ideas. You know, we love the radical transformation story. But the reality is, sanctification is really a gradual, incremental process that happens day by day and accumulates and compounds over long periods of time. This is the process of holiness. And that's what this is all about, holiness, identity, all of it falls into the same umbrella, which is that it is not achieved.
It is discovered. It is discovered. We walk into greater measures of it. As time goes on, Michelangelo is one of the world's most famous artists of all time. And he was a great [00:07:00] painter and a sculptor. And he, you know, did a bunch of different art forms. Arguably his most famous work is the statue of David.
And if you dig a little bit deeper into the story of Michelangelo, You discover that this man actually became obsessed. So he would, he actually used to break into labs and he would study dead bodies. It was totally frowned upon back in the day. You know, today we have, we call them cadavers and med students and that kind of thing are able to study them and learn from them.
But back when he was around, that was a totally frowned upon practice. You did not mess with the dead, but he was just way too curious. He wanted to understand all of the intricacies of the human body. And because he expounded his knowledge so significantly by, you know, doing something he, I guess, shouldn't have done.
It came out in his work. He, he, he was just totally obsessed, but then the details and the intricacies of that sculpture are rather riveting. And they're what make it so fantastic. Now, why am I, why am I saying all of this? When Michael Angelo was [00:08:00] asked about the David, you know, somebody said, how did you come up with this thing?
This thing is brilliant. This thing is genius. How did you, you know, what, how did you do this? He said, I saw the David all along. I simply just had to release him. What was he saying? He's saying I, everybody else would have seen a big block of marble, but I saw David within there and all I had to do was remove everything from the block of marble that wasn't David.
And when God looks at you, he sees the same thing. He sees you as the perfected. Individual that you will be one day. And this process of sanctification is that we day by day, bit by bit, piece by piece and part by part, remove everything from us. That is not that perfect new creation. And some days you're going to move ahead, leaps and bounds.
Some days you're going to move incrementally. Either way, our goal is to continue to discover [00:09:00] the identity that has been deposited within us, that new creation that avoids temptation, that doesn't sin, that makes the right decision, that controls its tongue, that looks at people in a healthy way. All of those things are part, they're in your account.
It's just a matter of you and I maturing so that we can access it, becoming more and more like Jesus every single day. Identity is not achieved. It's discovered. So that's everything for today, guys. Thank you so much for listening. I hope you have an amazing day and I'll talk to you guys soon. Take care. [00:10:00] [00:11:00]
